Gastronomy

It is likely that the Strahov Monastery had cellars for storing wine from the very beginning of its existence. However, the true fame of the wine cellars at this location dates back to the 14th century when Emperor Charles IV brought grapevines from France to Prague. Thanks to their skill, the Premonstratensians were able to produce wine of such high quality that, despite the poorer climatic conditions in Bohemia, it could compete with French wines. King Charles IV rewarded them with a coat of arms, a copy of which is displayed in the current restaurant above the bar. It is known that Charles IV was a lover of good wine and often visited the Premonstratensian wine cellars.

The interior of the Na Pekle restaurant is made up of former monastic wine cellars. These have a tradition dating back to the Middle Ages and are carved into the sandstone of the Petřín rock.

Restaurant "Na Pekle"

Come and experience an unforgettable gastronomic experience in the picturesque setting of medieval wine cellars. Stop by for a short or long break during your walk through the Petřín Gardens. Our dishes are distinguished by their exceptional taste, thanks to the careful selection of ingredients and the skills of our chef. An interesting detail is also the name of the restaurant "Na Pekle," located near the monastery, which means "in hell." Perhaps this suggests that heaven and hell are not actually that far apart.

Our History and Unique Atmosphere

Our restaurant "Na Pekle" has been proudly part of the business of the Royal Canonry of Premonstratensians at Strahov since 2021. This historic restaurant is located in an exceptional area near the Strahov Monastery and is carved into the Petřín rock. Since the 12th century, Premonstratensian brothers have been storing wines here, both from their own production and imported. These cellars provided ideal conditions for aging. The history of the place and the care of wine form an inseparable part of our restaurant's history. In combination with the authentic cellar environment, we offer guests not only a gastronomic experience but also a touch of history connected to this place.

Our restaurant prides itself not only on excellent cuisine but also on having its own water spring. In addition to the above, we offer seating in a picturesque summer garden called "In Paradise," which is ideal for relaxing while watching passing tourists. From this garden, there is a view of the monastery complex. This view is even more enchanting from the adjacent monastery garden, which is open to visitors year-round. The close connection with the Premonstratensian monastery brings authenticity and tradition to the restaurant.
