The Strahov Monastery compound is among the most visited monuments in Prague. To maintain its beauty for future visitors, we ask you to follow these rules. Thank you.

To keep the area in beautiful condition, it is necessary to follow the visitors' rules.

Visitor Rules of Strahov Monastery Compound

PREAMBLE

The Strahov Monastery is a spiritual center, a precious legacy of our ancestors, and a national cultural monument. All visitors are warmly welcome.  
We kindly ask visitors to respect the unique character of this place, to help protect it, and to behave with dignity and consideration during their visit, in accordance with safety, hygiene, fire protection, and other generally binding legal regulations, customary rules of civil conduct, and these Visitor Rules.  

PROPERTY OWNER

The owner of the premises is the Royal Canonry of Premonstratensians at Strahov, Company ID 00415090, with registered office at Strahovské nádvoří 132/1, 118 00 Prague 1 (hereinafter referred to as the “owner”).  

DEFINITION OF TERMS  

For the purposes of these rules, the Strahov Monastery grounds (hereinafter also referred to as the “grounds”) include all buildings and areas accessible via the main gate from Strahovská and Pohořelec (Dlabačov) streets to Strahov Courtyard, the staircase from Pohořelec Square (the so-called “Mouse Hole”) to Strahov Courtyard, the promenade of Raoul Wallenberg (from Úvoz Street past the viewpoint of the Strahov Garden), the passage through the wall into the forest park from the stairs from Vlašská Street to the Petřín Lookout Tower (toward the viewpoint with the statue of Our Lady of Exile), the entry from the Petřín Lookout Tower past the “I Love You Bistro” into the so-called Upper Monastery Garden, the gate in the Hunger Wall from Strahovská Street into the Upper Monastery Garden, and the gate from the courtyard of the Lindner Hotel.  

Visitor facilities refer to the Strahov Library, the Strahov Picture Gallery, and the convent building of the monastery with historical halls, refectories, and the exhibition of paintings of St. Norbert. Also included are the Basilica of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary and the convent garden when accessed via a guided tour conducted by Strahov Monastery guides. A visitor facility is a site within the grounds accessible to visitors during operating hours according to the applicable tour route.

The Information Center refers to the Church of St. Roch, located at Strahov Courtyard near the main gate entering the monastery grounds from Strahovská and Pohořelec streets. The Information Center includes the monastery ticket office, where visitors can purchase tickets and obtain information about tour routes and other cultural offerings.  

A visitor is any person who enters the grounds of the Strahov Monastery.

ENTRY AND ACCESS TO THE PREMISES  

Visitors are required to familiarize themselves with these Visitor Rules before entering the grounds of the Strahov Monastery and to comply with the instructions and conditions contained herein. The owner reserves the right to close visitor facilities or parts of the grounds for operational, technical, safety, or other important reasons. Courtyards and similar areas of the grounds are designated for specific purposes; access by motor vehicles is only permitted with the owner’s permission. Riding bicycles, scooters, tricycles, Segways, or similar devices is prohibited within the grounds.  

Conditions for use of the premises within the grounds

  • Visitors must maintain peace and order and behave in a manner that does not endanger the safety or health of others in any way; responsibility for children lies with their parents or adult guardians.  
  • Organizing gatherings unrelated to visits to the monastery, and holding musical, vocal, theatrical, or other performances or mass events, is only permitted with the owner’s prior written consent.  
  • Selling any goods, distributing promotional materials or publications, conducting any form of promotion, or soliciting monetary or other support is only allowed with the owner’s prior written consent.  
  • Video recordings, filming, and photography (in visitor facilities without flash) are permitted for personal use only; for other purposes (especially commercial), filming and photography within the grounds require the owner’s prior written consent.  
  • Audio or video recordings of guided tours conducted by Strahov Monastery guides are only permitted with their consent.  
  • External guides can obtain information about the terms of guiding tours from the Promotion and Visitor Services Department (abbeytour@strahovskyklaster.cz); guiding activities may only be performed by persons holding the appropriate qualifications in accordance with the Trade Licensing Act and the laws of the Czech Republic or the applicable laws of an EU member state in which the person is established.  
  • Visitors must always follow the instructions of guides, custodians, and other persons authorized by the owner.  

The following are specifically prohibited within the grounds

  • Disturbing the peace (using sound amplification devices, music, unauthorized singing, recorded music, loud behavior, and similar activities) or otherwise disrupting public order.  
  • Littering outside designated waste bins.  
  • Using drones or other aerial devices.  
  • Writing, painting, or spraying on walls or otherwise damaging objects in the grounds.  
  • Damaging collections, gardens, or any other property of the owner.  
  • Climbing scaffolding, accessing construction sites, or climbing over walls.  
  • Walking on grass areas marked with chains and stepping off designated paths; damaging greenery (picking flowers, breaking branches, etc.).  
  • Letting dogs roam freely.  
  • Entering the grounds with weapons, explosives, pyrotechnics, or other similarly dangerous items, with banners, flags, signs, or advertising displays.  
  • Entering the grounds in heavily soiled clothing.  
  • Entering the grounds while obviously intoxicated or under the influence of drugs or psychotropic substances.
  • Leaving luggage or other items unattended outside designated areas.  

In visitor facilities, it is also prohibited to  

  • Touch exhibited items and interior walls.  
  • Eat or drink inside the facilities, or enter with ice cream, drinks, etc.  
  • Smoke or handle open flames inside the facilities.  
  • Enter areas with historical wooden floors wearing high-heeled shoes.  
  • Enter visitor facilities with dogs, except for assistance dogs for people with disabilities (entry with a small dog is only allowed if the dog is carried by the visitor throughout the tour inside the facility and the instructions of the custodians are respected).  
  • Enter visitor facilities with bags, backpacks, or other items exceeding A4 size (a storage area for oversized items is located in the Information Center, which closes at 17:00; stored items must be collected before this time). Visitors must not leave documents, money, mobile phones, or valuables in the lockers; the owner is not responsible for any loss.  

Ensuring protection and safety of visitors  

To protect visitors, cultural heritage, and art collections, both indoor and outdoor areas of the grounds are monitored by a camera system.  

For safety or operational reasons, the owner may limit the number of visitors in individual facilities.

Visitors must follow the instructions of authorized staff and representatives of the owner. In cases of prohibited, inappropriate, or disrespectful behavior, visitors may be asked to leave the premises.

Visitors must respect all information and rules communicated via external and internal signage, noticeboards, banners, and signs.

In the event of fire during a tour, visitors must follow the instructions of custodians or other authorized persons.

In the event of injury during a tour, visitors may seek assistance from custodial staff. The owner is not responsible for injuries or damage resulting from violations of the Visitor Rules. The owner’s liability for any harm caused to visitors is governed by generally binding legal regulations.  
In the case of loss or damage to exhibited items, all visitors present in the affected area are obliged to comply with all safety measures, including personal searches conducted by the Czech Police if necessary.

If a Holy Mass, another religious service, or a public cultural or other event is taking place in the Basilica of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary or elsewhere in the grounds, the visitor acknowledges by attending the event that photographs or video footage may be taken during the event. Such documentation may be used to pursue the legitimate interests of the owner or parish, especially for promotional purposes, or to share event information on the website, social media, printed materials, etc. This documentation will primarily aim to capture the overall atmosphere and course of the event, rather than individual attendees. If a visitor has any objections to this practice (or to a specific published photo/video), they may contact the Promotion and Visitor Services Department.  

Opening hours

The grounds of the Strahov Monastery, excluding visitor facilities, are open daily without restrictions, unless otherwise decided by the owner. Access to the vestibule of the Basilica of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary is permitted outside of times when services, cleaning, or other private activities of the owner or parish are taking place. The vestibule is generally open from 6:30 to 18:45. Visitor facilities are open daily from 9:00 to 17:00, except on days determined by the owner. The last opportunity to purchase tickets is at 16:00 for the so-called Combined Tour and at 16:15 for the Library-only tour. The last entry to tour routes is at 16:30. For the Combined Tour, we recommend entering no later than 16:15. Visitors must leave the visitor facility by 17:00.  

ADMISSION  

Entry to the Strahov Monastery grounds is free of charge, except for visitor facilities. Admission to visitor facilities must be paid before the tour at the ticket office. Tickets can also be purchased online at www.strahovskyklaster.cz or via the self-service terminal located at the staircase leading to the library. After payment, visitors receive a printed or digital ticket, which must be kept throughout the tour, shown upon entry to specific areas, and presented to custodial staff upon request. The ticket is valid for one visit to the specified tour route. Admission fees and any changes to the tours are posted at the Information Center and at www.strahovskyklaster.cz. Information about special guided tours is available at www.strahovskyklaster.cz or via abbeytour@strahovskyklaster.cz.  

Barrier-free access

Barrier-free access to the Strahov Monastery is only available for exhibitions held in the basement of the convent building. For persons with disabilities, access to other areas of the monastery may be arranged in advance by contacting abbeytour@strahovskyklaster.cz.  

These Visitor Rules take effect on March 1, 2025.  

Royal Canonry of Premonstratensians at Strahov

Documentation of events within the premises

In the event that a holy mass, another religious ceremony, or a cultural or other public event takes place in the Basilica of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary or elsewhere within the premises of the Strahov Monastery, owned by the Royal Canonry of Premonstratensians at Strahov (hereinafter referred to as "the Canonry"), the visitor acknowledges by their participation that photo or video documentation may be taken during the event.

This documentation may be used to fulfill the legitimate interests of the monastery and parish, particularly for purposes of promoting the event, providing information about the event, etc., on the website, social media, printed materials, etc. The photo/video documentation will primarily be taken to capture the atmosphere and overall course of the event rather than individual persons. If the visitor has any objections to this (or to a specific published photo/video), they may contact the designated person.
